autour de Paris
advice: dining out around Paris
Helpful information towards a memorable experience:
- Get a good street map. My favorite was the Michelin number 11 (Paris, Plan et Index) both due to its format (book) and that it had métro maps in the back. It seems to have been replaced by either number 54 or 55. In any case, once you have a good map, ensure that you refer to it before you go anywhere
- If you refuse to travel without Internet access (alas, I fall into this category), Google Maps is helpful. Clicking on an address below will bring up a map with métro stations
- Practice your French. Even a few words will go a long way: either try and learn some menu items before you go or take a good pocket guide with you. Many of the places listed here are non-tourist in nature and may not have English menus or people who speak much English. Don't be afraid, smile and have a great time. Despite what some Americans might tell you, Parisians are polite if you at least manage a bonjour along the way
- Reservations are never a bad idea. If you are staying in a hotel and do not speak a bit of French, ask someone to make a call for you
- As a result of the law that went into effect on 01 janv 2008, all indoor public places including restaurants and bars are non-smoking
- if anything here helped you to plan for your visit to Paris, please take a moment to drop me a note

Any time you want to tuck into a classic, old Paris interior where they serve you a starter of housemade terrine -- as much as you can eat -- this is the place to go. One of the best confit de canard that I have had in awhile, and a small but solid wine list to accompany the dishes |

One of my favorite haunts in Paris. Oui, a real Thai restaurant where they will make it as hot as you want using only authentic ingredients. I have been eating here since 1990, how bad can it be? It is also literally next door to the Banana Café, one of the most well-known twink bars in Paris |

Intimate, personable, moody old interior anchored by a lovely comptoir avec un bord du zinc. Homemade desserts, reasonable and interesting wine list. I had a great 'argument' with the waiter when I asked to have my tarte tatin served cold with no crème fraîche. This place is classic old Paris for sure. I fear it could pulsate with wide-eyed, obnoxious tourists given its location, but that has not the case during my visits |

All the right ingredients for a sumptuous meal: minimalist interior in an old building, choosing one's courses over an apéritif before being seated, modern French cooling inspired by a young (and cute) chef who has traveled the world and brought those inspirations to his craft, a wine list which is fairly eclectic but well-chosen. For those of you whose French is rusty or non-existent, English is spoken. The spirit and wit of the chef seems to have been infused into the entire staff, all of whom were genuinely pleasant without pretense |

Gorgeous, initimate atmosphere for familial, well-executed Moroccan dishes. Very popular, reservations are a must. You'll certainly get to see what your neighbors are eating, as the tables are rather close to each other -- as though you are sitting at a communal table. Think of it as eating with an extended family you never knew you had and you'll have a great time and leave satiated |

Family run, warm and with a pleasantly cluttered interior. Vitello di tonnato, fresh pasta, and a great wine list from which I no longer make a selection: I let Giuseppe (the owner) do that, as he has figured out what I like. The classics done well, in a warm atmosphere with professional and friendly, if sometimes hurried service. Wine list on par for the food (leans towards reds) |

Friendly, family-run Italian place with pizza as the main attraction. Warm reception, limited but not overpriced wine list. Good place to stop and have a leisurely lunch or a sensible dinner |

Gorgeous, Belle Époque setting in the Bois de Boulogne for a sumptuous meal. Extensive wine list, Michelin * (2008). Outdoor seating on a verdant terrace during warm weather. Have fun navigating their Flash-infested website, complete with a 'soundtrack' that you seemingly cannot disable. WTF... |

Wine bar and restaurant with a focus on seasonal dishes that are well-prepared. The owner is a total card -- I don't know if he speaks English, but in French his sense of humor is quite dry, playful, and contributes significantly to the overall experience of dining. Great selection of wines by the glass, which can be paired with each course |

Very traditional bistro dishes (e.g. duck confit parmentier), classy ambiance, good wine list which is sensibly priced, service can be spotty but is usually polite |

Steak-frites! And nothing else... this place has been an institution for meat lovers since 1959. Its history is interesting. Small selection of inexpensive wine (who cares), and simple but consistently good desserts. Your only choice: how do you want your meat cooked? Be prepared to stand in line during peak dining hours, as they do not take reservations. If you do not mind eating late, show up around 23:00 and you'll be able to walk right in |

Close to the Arc de Triomphe, but just off the beaten path enough that it was seemingly void of tourists. The combination of a very warm welcome from the owner, as well as inventive food cooked and presented with care make for a relaxed visit. It features a wine list that is fairly broad and at prices that won't make you broke. They even blog their frequently-changing menu in advance |

Out of the way location, but worth the trip up to the end of métro ligne 4 for classic preparations of food from the Aveyron (home to Roquefort cheese and Laguiole knives). Wine list is quite reasonable, and both the service and atmosphere are warm and welcoming |

Inexpensive but extensive carte of quality Turkish food in a warm and welcoming environment. Limited wine list, but given the food it is not really a minus |
